Company Profile

Herman C. Grabowsky founded Standard Plumbing & Heating Company in 1912, in a storeroom on the corner of East Tuscarawas street, under the lobby of the Barnett Hotel. It started out as a small plumbing company that focused on small commercial projects and homes. Within six months the business grew, and as a result Herman's brother, William, joined the company. William became the office manager and Herman became the field operations manager. The company remained focused on three main areas of work, plumbing, hot water and steam heat.

In 1916, Standard purchased and relocated to the old Reichert building where they presently reside today at 435 Walnut Avenue SE., Canton, Ohio. Standard was incorporated in 1935, at which time Herman became President, and William Secretary and Treasurer. William died January 31, 1940. In 1943 the incorporation was dropped, and the company became the partnership of Herman and his wife.

Herman's son, Robert, entered the business in 1950. Robert W. Grabowsky is a mechanical engineering graduate from Purdue University. His enthusiasm, as well as the newly emerging air conditioning technology created a new venue for the company. The company was reincorporated in 1959. Herman Grabowsky was then President, Robert VP/Secretary. The company had approximately 15 employees at that time.

Standard had it's first large air conditioning project in the mid fifties. This was the City Hall in Canton, Ohio. This was the largest air conditioning project in the county. This started a long, ever increasing relationship with the burgeoning air conditioning industry.

Robert assumed the position of President in August 1971.

In 1989, an affiliated company named SheetMetal Crafters, Inc. was formed to provide sheet metal installations for all of Standard Plumbing projects. This Company provides quality workmanship at competitive pricing. Today it has expanded in all facets of sheetmetal with approximately 20 employees.

In 1979, Robert's son, David, entered the business full time with a degree in economics from the University of Colorado. David became an estimator/project manager as well as an officer of the company.

In the late 1970's and 1980's, the service department grew from an initial base of four service technicians to over 15, making Standard Plumbing & Heating a full service mechanical contractor. Areas of expertise include burners, boiler work, chillers, HVAC controls, rooftops and all specialty HVAC equipment.

In 1987, a Mansfield branch office was established as a result of business opportunities in the Mansfield area. This operation had its beginnings as one of the oldest mechanical contractors in the state of Ohio. This company has a very experienced staff of individuals that has serviced a 4 county area of Richland, Ashland, Knox and Crawford. Mansfield has a strong service department, which can setup or repair most major equipment such as chillers, boilers, rooftop equipment. There is also quite a bit of boiler retubing done within this area. Mansfield is aggressively competing for new installations throughout the area. Our presence is constantly growing throughout the area. Our branch is located at 194 South Illinois Avenue, Mansfield Ohio.

In 1997, Robert passed on the title of President to his son David.

In 1998 the company broke ground for a new building across the street from their 435 Walnut location. The expansion provides 9,000 square feet for warehousing and pipe fabrication. This will enable more buying power through efficient inventory and will make the movement of materials to job-sites faster. An overhead crane was installed with the option to add another in the future.

In 2006, the company acquired and additional 15,000 square feet of warehouse space to accommodate growth.

Today, Standard Plumbing & Heating Co. employs between 70 and 100 people in Canton and Mansfield. We are a full-service industrial, institutional and commercial mechanical contractor.
