A Large Manufacturing Facility
We were approached to negotiate a project on a new 250,000 square foot facility. The owner was interested in a showcase facility with state of the art technology. His largest concern for his employees was to provide excellent working conditions.
The area of emphasis was to provide excellent air quality. This was to be a difficult undertaking because there were over 100 small exhaust hoods to be installed throughout the plant. The work-stations would be used intermittently throughout the day.
We designed an air rotation system with ice storage as the primary cooling. We were able to negotiate an ice storage system with the Ohio Edison Power Company. Their standard rates were $.12 a kilowatt-hour, and by using after hours off-peak energy we were able to get the owner's $.03 kilowatt-hour charges. This is a 400% operating savings over standard rates. In addition, the power company directly paid the owner $85,000.00 for the additional HVAC installation.
By running the chiller in the evening at off peak hours we were able to manufacture ice, which is used during the day for cooling. This not only saved the owner money by operating off peak, it also gave the power company more capacity for other customers during high peak demand periods.
This innovative project received honorable mention at the year-end "Energy User News" awards in Atlanta, Georgia.
